more >Economic Impact Assessment
Policy makers and business leaders increasingly turn to universities to be economic engines for their regions. Experience demonstrates that creating local start-ups and licensing technologies are not sufficient economic drivers. As a result, state governments, local foundations, city officials, and other stakeholders commonly ask "What is the economic impact of the university on our region? How can we support our universities effectively?"
Wellspring's economic development consulting practice answers these questions through a combination of statistical analysis and qualitative research. Wellspring offers a multilayered methodology developed from years of academic research and practical experience working in technology transfer and industrial liaison offices. Our methodology assesses the many paths by which technology transfer impacts the local economy, in both quantitative and qualitative terms. In addition, Wellspring provides the credibility of an objective, independent advisor.
more >Tech Evaluation and Business Process Consulting
The goal of our business assessment and benchmarking projects is not simply to compare the usual peers. The focus of many benchmarking endeavors is to build a world-class technology transfer operation- better than peer institutions. Wellspring projects seek to broaden our clients frame of reference, examining institutions that could provide best practices under similar environmental influences and drawing on the Wellspring staffs extensive experience in technology commercialization.
more >COSurvey
The Commercialization Opportunity Survey (COS) is a product developed from Wellspring management's research on best practices in technology commercialization. The COSurvey is a software-based survey and analysis methodology that enables organizations, including universities and companies, to examine their internal research relationship and identify where opportunities for more commercialization prospects lie.
The COSurvey is focused on informal relationships-personal communications, individual consulting arrangements, and impromptu meetings. Informal relationships are often the most critical ingredient for effective technology transfer. What's said in the lab and in meetings carries at least as much value as what's written in a patent or published in a journal. Thus, formal relationships provide the required IP and necessary economic incentives, but informal relationships are the vehicle to exchange information that cannot be easily codified into intellectual property and written contracts. Informal university-industry relationships complement formal mechanisms and promise to create a virtuous cycle of disclosures, funding agreements, and licenses.
